Prepare your Windows and Doors for Spring
Spring is officially here! Although, the cold and snow are not completely gone, this is a great time to start getting your windows and doors ready for spring and summer. Start preparing now so that you can fully enjoy the warm weather ahead.
Clean Your Windows
The changing of seasons is a perfect time to give your windows a solid cleaning. Climbing ladders to reach high windows can be dangerous, so you might want to consider hiring a professional window cleaning company. The cost of cleaning your windows is nothing compared to your health and well-being.
If you do decide to clean your windows yourself, make sure you take the necessary precautions to remain safe. Always have someone hold your ladder and take extra care to make sure it is positioned on solid ground.
Clean your window glass and frames by wiping them down with warm water and a mild soap. Use a soft cloth to wipe off all the dirt and grime built up over the winter. We don't recommend using a pressure washer as it can damage siding and the water may penetrate into the walls of your home.
Rinse the windows afterwards with warm water and a squeegee or buff them dry with a soft cloth. Newspaper and a water/vinegar solution is a great way to get rid of the last streaks on the glass.
Do not use abrasive materials such as metal scrapers or sharp objects as they can permanently scratch or damage glass.

Removing Debris from Moving Parts
Slider windows and patio doors will have a track that can get clogged with dirt, rocks and other debris. Take a wet rag or paper towels and thoroughly clean out the track. Old toothbrushes can also be great for getting into hard to reach areas.
It's also a good idea to wipe other hardware and hinges, as you'll most certainly have a build up of dirt and other debris.
Lubricating the Hardware
Any moving part on your windows and doors, including tracks and hinges, should be lubricated at least twice a year, once in the spring and fall. Silicone lubricants are recommended. They repel water and prevent debris from sticking. Silicone lubricants are safe to use on many materials including painted surfaces, metal, wood and plastic.
How are your Window and Door Frames?
Inspect your window frames to look for signs of damage, peeling, cracking or fading. While modern windows and doors are largely maintenance free and won't need any extra servicing, older wood frames need regularly scraping and painting to protect the integrity of the wood. If your wooden window and door frames are in need of care, make sure you refinish as soon as possible. Water penetration into the wood can lead to warping, mould and deterioration over time.
This is also a good time to check caulking and weather stripping. Replace any worn out or missing weather-stripping and re-do caulking if necessary.
Clean and Check Your Window Coverings
As you are washing your windows, it's a good idea to make sure you blinds and curtains are clean as well. You can wipe your blinds with warm water and soap. Curtains can be washed or dry-cleaned depending on the material.
If you have automated shutters or blinds, this is a good time to check that they are working properly.
